Women in construction

ABOUT THE WIC PROGRAM

Founded in 2018, the Master Builders ACT Women in Construction (WIC) program was established with a vision to create a supportive community for female members in the construction industry. Beginning with ten women, from humble beginnings the program has blossomed to actively engage over 600 women and an increasing number of male allies.

How we’re making an impact

Addressing gender disparity in ACT construction

The Women in Construction program is dedicated to addressing the significant gender disparity within the construction sector, where only 15% of the workforce comprises women, and merely 3% are in “on-the-tools” roles.

More women in Canberra’s construction industry

Attracting more women, especially young females, into Canberra’s construction industry is essential for fostering diversity and addressing skills shortages.

Through advocacy, outreach and mentorship, we’re challenging the outdated stereotype that construction is ‘men’s work’ while highlighting the achievements and contributions of women in the industry.

Level the Site campaign

Master Builders Australia launched the Level the Site campaign in 2025 to promote diversity and inclusivity in the building and construction sector.

This campaign emphasises the importance of creating a workplace culture where women are welcomed and empowered.

As a part of this initiative, Master Builders ACT is committed to advocating for policies and practices that attract more women into apprenticeships, including carpentry, and ensure they receive the support needed to thrive in their careers.
