Overview

This nationally recognised course gives you the skills and knowledge to operate an elevating work platform (EWP) safely — including scissor lifts and boom lifts with a boom length under 11 metres. You’ll learn to plan the task, carry out pre-start checks, operate the platform safely, and shut down and secure it correctly.

Note: This course covers EWPs under 11 metres and does not require a licence. An EWP with a boom length of 11 metres or more requires a High Risk Work Licence — see Licence to Operate a Boom-Type EWP (TLILIC0005).

It’s delivered face-to-face with hands-on practical training and assessment.

What you'll learn

  • Planning EWP work and assessing hazards
  • Conducting pre-operational and safety checks
  • Operating the EWP safely using ground and platform controls
  • Working at height from an EWP, including fall protection
  • Shutting down, securing and maintaining the equipment

Who this course is for

This course is for anyone who operates, or will operate, an elevating work platform under 11 metres. It suits:

  • Construction, maintenance and facilities workers
  • Electricians, painters and signage installers
  • Warehouse and logistics workers
  • Events and infrastructure crews

Assessment & what you'll receive

Assessment includes both theory-based assessment activities and practical demonstration. On successful completion you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for RIIHAN301E Operate Elevating Work Platform, plus an operator card.

Entry requirements

To enrol, you’ll need to:

  • Be at least 15 years old. Bring valid photo identification on the day.
  • Have a basic level of written and spoken English
  • Have the physical capability to safely operate an elevating work platform and complete the practical training and assessment activities
  • Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — if you don’t have one, create it at usi.gov.au.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for this course. Safety boots, a hard hat and high-visibility appropriate clothing for conditions must be worn during this course.

Career pathways

EWP operation is widely required across construction, maintenance and logistics. To operate larger boom-type platforms, the next step is a High Risk Work Licence:

  • TLILIC0005 Licence to Operate a Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform (boom length 11 metres or more)
  • Pairs well with RIIWHS204 Work Safely at Heights

Cost & funding

  • Standard rate:$673.00
  • Member rate:$606.00
  • With TFA funding:$478.00
  • Member + TFA:$411.00
